Volunteers teaching and empowering children with the attitudes, skills, and knowledge essential for healthy living.
Project Charlie is a community-based effort to combat youth experimentation and use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs. This age-appropriate and research-based substance abuse prevention program promotes the social and emotional growth of elementary school children by encouraging a positive self-image and discouraging chemical use and abuse.
Holland Area Project Charlie was initiated in 1986 by community leaders who were concerned about emerging trends in youth substance use. The program is based on a nationally recognized model and is an integral part of participating schools' health curriculum.
Community volunteers facilitate nine Project Charlie lessons annually in about 90 classrooms. Each year, over 100 volunteers help more than 2,200 students make healthy life choices.
All third and fifth grade students in the following school districts participate:
-
Corpus Christi Catholic School
-
Holland Christian Schools (optional after-school program, grades 3-6)
-
Holland Public Schools
-
Saugatuck Public Schools
-
West Ottawa Public Schools
Financial support for Project Charlie is provided by a variety of resources including Lakeshore Coordinating Council, participating school districts, school parent-teacher organizations, and individual and corporate sponsors. Community contributions (tax deductible) are welcomed, encouraged, and definitely needed!
